Clinical Research Studies

New Studies Seeking Participants | Past Study Results

New Studies: Interstitial Cystitis

You may be eligible for two new IC studies.

Two national studies of interstitial cystitis are being conducted by the University of Maryland in association with the National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

  1. Events Preceding Interstitial Cystitis (EPIC) study seeks risk factors for IC. This study is recruiting women with symptoms of IC for 12 months or less. These women are then matched to women without IC, recruited nationally by random phone dialing and the incidence of exposures preceding onset of the disease are then compared. This is a time-honored method of revealing clues to the causes of disease.

  2. Maryland Genetics of Interstitial Cystitis (MaGIC) study investigates the genetics of IC. Family members of IC patients have 17 times the prevalence of IC as the general population. Furthermore, identical twins of IC patients have a much higher risk of having IC themselves than do fraternal (non-identical) twins. This study is attempting to reveal the gene(s) of susceptibility to IC and is recruiting female IC patients who have a female blood relative with IC.

These are two separate studies. Both are conducted by telephone and mail and neither requires any travel. It is not necessary to have any diagnostic procedure on order to participate. Steps have been taken to make participation as convenient as possible.

I am highly encouraging my patients to participate if they are eligible. There is no hurry; these studies will be recruiting patients for several years. Also, please mention this to any friend or relative who you may think has symptoms of IC.
